I've been using DoIt for a few months now and one feature that I would really like is the ability to have automated subsequent tasks. I think it would make the system much more efficient.
Whenever I have a project I spend lots of time entering all of the tasks or steps of the project into DoIt. As I am working, as I finish a task, I have to go back to the project and move the task from Next to Today. A lot of the projects I work on are a series of steps and the first task has to be completed before the second task can begin. It would be nice if these steps were linked.
For example:
Step 1 - Dig a hole
Step 2 - Pour concrete in the hole.
Step 3 - Wait for concrete to cure.
It would be nice to have the ability to link these together. That way, if Step 1 has been marked as completed in DoIt Today, Step 2, which by default would be in Next, would automatically be moved up to Tomorrow.
It may not be possible but it would definitely make DoIt a lot more efficient. The review time would be much faster as well as tasks would be moved to their next logical locations in the system.
Yes, it would be practical, and has been suggested a number of times in the main forum.
In my own opinion, it is a bit too crude to just have the tasks be rigidly one-by-one sequential. There are often a few tasks that can be done first of all (now) in any order. A simple and efficient solution to all of this would be to have a "horizontal line" in the project. Above the line are those task that can be started now in any order, and below the line are those that will be started automatically, one at a time, when the first group has been done.
What Doit did do in v 4 was introduce manual sorting of the next actions and the option to Show One or Show All next actions from each project on the Next list. This was probably intended as a solution but really is not. It affects all projects equally and does not allow for the situation that some projects have more than one next action. It also does not allow for the fact that other people's next actions (on my Waiting list) can be either current or subsequent in exactly the same way as my own next actions.
