In Doit.im, once sent to your contact, the task is not yours any more. It become a task of the receiver's. Even if you unassign it, it has already went to the receiver's. So , first thing's first, you should let the receiver know that he/she doesn't have to do the task. In your case, you may do as belows:
1. Forward to someone else if you think the previous one is not the most appropriate to complete it. Just double click the task in Waiting, choose another contact and then send it. You may also ask the previous one to delete the task in the comments. To learn more about "Comment", please click here,http://enblog.doit.im/post/19626248876/wanna-interact-with-your-contacts-on-doit-im-wanna.
2. Complete or delete the task, and then create a new one to send to your another contact. When you complete or delete it, he/she'll receive a completion/deletion message.
For your another question, "Why was this marked as complete when it's not fixed and I haven't had a chance to respond", as I told before, it's our current rule that assigned tasks cannot be canceled and we will consider improving it in the future. Second, we replied it on August 14 but there has been no answer from you. :( In the Help Center, if you are mentioned in the “@XXX” form, then you will first get informed by a message. http://help.doit.im/topics/742. Also, you can start a new ticket anytime
If there is anything else we can help with, please feel free to let us know.
Thank you for your feedback and support.
1. Why was this marked as complete when it's not fixed and I haven't had a chance to respond.
2. How on earth can you have a system for organising tasks which doesn't allow you to re-assign responsibility? That's not a minor detail, that's seriously broken. The whole point is that the tasks is MINE, I need it completed, and if I have no control over it once I've assigned it to someone then the assignment feature is completely useless.

I have assigned a task to someone. I now want to unassign it, so it is no longer in my waiting section, because I've decided to action it myself.
However there appears to be no way to do this - I've tried edit then deleting the user from the assigned section. Is this really not possible?

Hello,
Now, assigned tasks cannot be canceled. That is to say, if you assign a a task to someone, there is no way to unassign it. :(
You may post a comment, in which please tell the receiver that you will do the task yourself. Here is the introduction about "Comment". Hope it could help.
Shall you need any help or have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thanks for your support on Doit.im.

1. OK, I'm glad I can re-assign tasks to someone else, that's a good feature. But in this case I want to re-assign the task to myself. As I can't add myself as a contact, this isn't possible.
It seems weird to lose control of a task when I'm the one who wants it complete - surely this isn't useful when it's not how the real world works.
2. I would happily duplicate the task for myself and delete the assigned version - except I can't duplicate the task.
Do.it is very useful, but this is a deal-breaker for me - I sub-contract work and if the sub-contractor has more control over the task than I have, then I lose the ability to take control of it myself. I'm meant to be the one responsible for delivering the task, and this will prevent me controlling it. Surely I should still be the owner if I created it?
Once my trial is up I'd be happy to pay for the software if this is fixed - otherwise I'll have to look elsewhere. Can you let me know what you plan to do?
3. Re notifications: http://help.doit.im/topics/742
This is only any use if I'm in the help center, which I only visit when I have an issue. Most support systems message you in the app itself or send you an email! As this one doesn't, I only know I have a response next time I visit.
Don't you think notifying me by email would be more practical? Or notifying me in the doit app itself which is where I'll be much more often? It would certainly suit me better and I imagine the same would apply to other users.
Thanks for your help. -

A: Re-assign the task to yourself? Now, even if the task has been assigned to your contact, it still exists in Waiting box. You can also do it and when you complete it, then the receiver will get the message.
In the future, we will improve this feature. When the deadline of the forwarded task is tomorrow, it will go to Tomorrow and when today, it will go to Today box.
Q2: I would happily duplicate the task for myself and delete the assigned version - except I can't duplicate the task.

A: I am so sorry. I am not quite understand this point. Could you please make some examples about it?
And later, you said, "Once my trial is up I'd be happy to pay for the software if this is fixed - otherwise I'll have to look elsewhere. Can you let me know what you plan to do?" ---What kind of features do you want?

A: "This is only any use if I'm in the help center, which I only visit when I have an issue. Most support systems message you in the app itself or send you an email! In general, we will give you an answer in 24 hours.
"Don't you think notifying me by email would be more practical? Or notifying me in the doit app itself which is where I'll be much more often? It would certainly suit me better and I imagine the same would apply to other users."---There are no email notifications. If there are, people will have to go to his email box to receive the messages. And now getting messages and giving a reply can finished in one system, the Help Center.
Also, there are no push notifications in Doit.im, the reason of which is because your attention on tasks may interruption. We will seriously consider whether the push notifications are necessary or not in Doit.im.
