@hntopper this feature would be nice. I use tags and tag their name. Not the best like Nirvana, but its the only work around I have found.
Would it be possible just to be able to add someone's name so you can assign them action item that is not a Doit member just so I have a record of who I'm waiting on for the action item?
I don't need to collaborate with them, I just want to be able to organize my Waiting for list by the person who's I've delegated the task to.
Thank you.

@hntopper
Hello,
In your case, I think you may use Context or Tag instead. Context in Doit.im not only refers to a place where you do the task, but also a person you talk with or a tool in hand.
Here, create a context named as your contact, like Michael. Add tasks to it and you can view all the tasks relate to Michael when you open the "Michael" context.
Alternatively, create a tag named as your contact also when you adding a task. Assign the tag to your tasks and then, you can filter them by the tag.
If you have many tasks assigned to different contacts and you want to see them at once, you may create a filter, restricting the list to "Context" is "Michael, Jim..." or "Tag" is "Michael, Jim...". Now, filter boxes can be added on the web/mac/windows platform and but viewed on all the platform we support. Here is a video about creating a filter box on the web.

Michelle, thank you for the suggestions. I think they could be a work around, but won't solve the issue. By using Tags as a way to assign an Action item, I still would not know who exactly I had assigned the task to if I have listed multiple Tags that were people's names. For example. If my boss Cheryl asked me to run a sales report and give it to her as soon as it it completed. I need to engage with Carole to get the report completed. If I assign Carole the Action Item and add her name as a Tag, and also add Cheryl's name as a tag as well as the next time I ran into her it would be something I would want to give her a status update on. So in this instance, both Carole and Cheryl's tags would be associated with this Action Item and I wouldn't know by looking at the filter which one I gave to due the task vs just needed to consult with on it (or provide an update to).
As for using context... I am part of a very large organization and interact with many many people. There would be too many context to set up a person's name for everyone that I "wait" on to get something accomplished. I don't think this would be a viable solution as there would be 25+ contexts listed with people's names.
I understand that you have designed the "Waiting For" function to work in conjunction with your collaboration features within the tooll. I think this is great and many will appreciate it. However, I think it should be altered slightly just to allow us to put someone's name in even though they may not be a Doit customer. In that instance, the collaboration is turned off and it's just a field holding the information of who's the task has be delegated to. -

@hntopper
In the future, we will support adding a contact to a task without sending it out.
But in your case, our suggestion is refining tasks. Here, you mentioned two tasks:
1. my boss Cheryl asked me to run a sales report and give it to her as soon as it it completed
2. ngage with Carole to get the report completed
You may add a tag to them respectively and then the problem you pointed out will be solved. Suppose that now you can add a contact (who is not a Doit.im user) to a task and you may add two or more contacts to a task, then you will also encounter the problem you said above.
Could you please let us know when we support what you want, how you will make use of it?

Thanks Michelle, I appreciate your responsiveness.
In your suggestion above to refine the task (i.e. create two tasks), I would then have to input the task twice, thus requiring twice the time/work to put in two action items. While that may not sound like a lot, I have a large staff that works for me and to do that in every instance it would add up quickly to a lot of work.
The way I would use the feature is to very simply track who I"m waiting on to complete the Action and who I need to follow up on when the report is completed. For example that I referenced above.... I would assign the task to Carole so in the "Waiting For" list it would show Carole as the person that I'm waiting on to complete the action (just like waiting for works today, it's just that it's not using any collaboration). I would list Cheryl as the tag as I know I will need her to give her an update on the status of the report the next time I see or speak with her. As I stated above, while I can certainly list both their names as tags, it would just make it hard for me to tell by looking at the action item who I assigned the Action to. -
