Hi,
Sorry that I haven't answered for so long.
This feature can be useful for control other people working in the same project by importing the their schedule made in Excel. And vice versa.
Other good feature can be the ability to add tasks that will start after the completion of the specified task.
Best regards,
Andrew -

Hi!
I have requested and looked in on others posts re: an export feature (which is routinely requested).
I was told in the past that export would be added as a feature in the future. That was over 1.5 years ago I believe.
I am an extremely loyal Doit.im user, and I refer you to other people all the time, I signed up through 2019 when you rolled out Pro, and I am an extremely satisfied user.
Thus, I am not at all looking to leave Doit.im.
That said, you all SIMPLY MUST implement an export procedure, SOON. With great respect, I say to you that you have been in business too long to not yet have addressed this.
I and others depend so very heavily on Doit.im at this point that many of us would be devastated if this data was lost.
Plus, as others have noted, sometime some of the more technically advanced of us might want to investigate our own ToDo data in ways other than Doit.im presently supports.
I don't think many of us would care if the export were something as simple as dumping all the relevant rows from all the relevant tables to a set of CSV files.
BUT WE NEED SOMETHING! If through some horrible event Doit.im were to go offline, even if for a week, this would be disastrous to all of us.
So, kindly, please implement some sort of export procedure, as promised over a year ago.
The export needs to include ALL data, including HISTORICAL data. I personally need this because I write invoices to clients (i.e., bills they are to pay me) based on Doit.im data (i.e., tasks I've done for my clients, marked by tags I create for each client). I often only bill once every 6-12 months, so having access to historical Doit.im tasks is extremely important to me.
ALTERNATIVELY,
If you could update and re-release your API --- an API that grants access to all of user's data --- then I'm sure a plethora of people would write and share export scripts for Doit.im, saving you the trouble of having to write that.
Indeed, I think many people are craving for an API to Doit.im, and I think the Doit.im community is suffering for it. I think a whole bunch of useful utilities would crop up by open-source developers that could greatly enhance the Doit.im experience. Ultimately, I think Snow Orange and Doit.im are suffering for this, as I know of several associates and colleagues who will simply not use Doit.im for it's lack of export or API.
I hope my comments here help you best decide how to prioritize your development efforts. I humble thank you for the honor of listening to my request.
Thanks!
Doug Morse

I also need it, cannot trust a system with no export feature, if something goes wrong I lose all my planning.
Thanks -
12/24/2013 15:59#8PRO
Same for me. Doit team is so mistaken with this issue. Doit will only really take off when they understand this and become really trustable.
-
12/24/2013 16:08#9PRO
And now, as they have been doing in the last two years they will ask "Please explain why you need this feature...." Don 't bother about your data..." We will consider your suggestion ...." Doit team. You're doing a great job but you have to settle this issue for good . It's THE weakness of you great app

@wendy_only:
Thanks for your feedback, and happy holidays to you, too!
But wendy, we do worry. :) And you do not seem to be hearing us.
The issue is not just about data protection and security. It's also about being able to do other things with our data.
For example, it would be tremendously helpful if I could import my Doit.im data into my own database so I could then generate invoices from it. As it stands now, I have to manually search and copy each task I complete that is billable, then paste that by hand into my accounting software, which is very time consuming.
That's just one of numerous examples.
I just don't understand. As a software engineer for 25+ years, I know that developing a basic export procedure can be done in a matter of 2-4 hours, no matter how many database tables are in use. Even if Doit.im is using map-reduce and something like Hadoop (i.e., NoSQL), the data can still be readily exported.
Can you explain to us WHY there's no export procedure after 2+ years in business? -
12/30/2013 09:09#12PRO
@morsedl
Hi,
We are going to open our API. And then we will make the decision about this feature. -
12/30/2013 21:44#13PRO
@wendy_only
That is good to hear, thank you!
Provided the API is comprehensive enough, and, importantly, gives access to all data --- including and especially all historical data --- then that is all that is needed. I or someone else will write an export procedure and make it publicly available, I'm sure.
Can you give me an estimated time range for when the API will again start to be available, ror example, no sooner than February 1 2014 and no later than April 1 2014 (or something like that)?
Thanks! -
12/30/2013 23:33#14PRO
After 2 years seeing many and many people asking for the export feature, the only conclusion is that you don't intend to developp it.
Your position is very difficult to understand. This makes me worry a lot. -
01/15/2014 09:52#15PRO
@wend_only
Sigh. Another client, 10 users, who will not switch to Doit.im because they cannot ensure they can backup and access all of their corporate data in their own way for their own purposes.
That's another $2000.00 USD per year lost to Doit.im because of this issue. Just FYI. -
01/15/2014 09:53#16PRO
@wendy_only
Oops, typo: $200.00 USD, of course. :) -
01/15/2014 10:07#17PRO
@wendy_only
Also, I wonder if this is also perhaps an intercultural issue.
I'm a cognitive psychologist, not an intercultural one, but one of my close collaborators is, and in the past has specialized in German-Chinese intercultural research and training (Dr. Stephan Kammhuber). So, these are issues with which I have some amount of expertise.
Chinese and Asian cultures, as of course you know, tend toward community, commonality, family, interdependency, and sharing. Western cultures, especially the U.S., tend toward individualism, compartmentalization, self-reliance, and control.
Thus, this issue of not being able to export our data and have an API for to access ALL our data as we see fit really strikes deep in the Western mind, especially about critical data that drives planning and actions (like Doit.im). In our societies, we do not tend to rely on family, friends, and co-workers in our daily activities nearly as heavily as in Eastern cultures. We do not give gifts nearly as frequently in the workplace to strength relationships, to built trust, and to show commitment. These are strengths of the Eastern culture that are unfamiliar to us and often make us nervous. We tend to rely on ourselves and turn to others when needed, whereas in the East people tend to rely on the community and turn to self-reliance when needed.
I don't know if this helps at all. I really hope to see Doit.im succeed on as large of a scale as you would like, internationally, and this is the one issue I keep coming back to, because it is the one issue that is keeping me from helping you expand your client base, significantly so.
Thanks for listening. :)

Sorry but I don' t understand what an API is.
Does it mean that a normal user, (for example a business man or an executive with no knowledge of computer programming) will be then able to export his data? -
01/17/2014 10:15#20PRO
@joaquinmari
Hi,
Sorry that the answer is no. But don't worry that there are users and products who have contacted with us for API for making this feature and they will open this feature to all Doit.im users. -

Thank Wendy.
Excuse me for my poor knowledge in computer programming.
Do you mean these people will developp a tool for the export feature, and then they will sell it to Doit users? -

I add my request for an export tool for all the data of doit.im (for personal backup for example or to have an own version in some format).

@wendy_only - if you consider opening parts of the API first (which you've stated), I suggest you concentrate on an read-only API (getting all tasks/projects/goals etc.). This would be enough to implement a simple export tool which is asked here so often.

Reliable export feature is the last thing I am missing to fully switch to doit and buy a pro feature. Sooner you implement it, sooner you will earn some money from me :)

I managed to make javascript for exporting tasks, tags, notes, priorities in Chrome Console, see files here (and read Read.me in repository):
https://github.com/arberg/doitimExport
-
05/06/2014 19:32#30PRO
@arberg - I'm getting SyntaxError: Unexpected token <. Ideas?
-
05/11/2014 21:04#31PRO
@metaloop I get "< Undefined", and it prints all the tasks, and those tasks are also in the clipboard (ie. I can ctrl-v paste into editor).
You might try to update or download again from github, because I made some changes today, but it should compile equally well before and after. Something might have gone wrong on your download. You migh ttry download using 'Clone In desktop' button or 'Download Zip' or right-click doitExport.js and click save. Either of those should work fine.
You might also try debugging the problem by removing almost all lines and check if that works. You might start by including only :
var allTaskLines = "";
console.log(allTaskLines);
copy(allTaskLines);
I have also attached files now. -

I found this really useful. Although it looks intimidating it's not too hard in practice (I'm a tecchy but I think for non-tecchy types it should be ok) and puts your entire task list into a text file:

Export is a really basic feature for user trust. Why should I enter data I care about in your system if I can't export it, like I can from Google or Facebook? I'm a new user, but now I am reconsidering. Someday I might move to a platform you don't support, or you might cease to run the service, and I need to be able to trust the system and move my data if the future necessitates it.

@prasad_ars Thank you very much for your explanation!
Based on your need, I think what you need is a list of the projects or goals you've completed during the past year, rather than all the specific tasks since they are too small and trivial and too many to review. So would it be better if we may add a feature to view all the goals and projects you've completed during a certain month, year?
What do you think?
Welcome to discuss with us so that we'll consider deep on your side.
