@khaberz
I do not have a good answer for you, but I believe you will find it a bit difficult no matter how you do it, because:
- Doit does not have a permanent top level "app filter" such as an "Areas" or "Workspace" switch
- Doit has no implicit (inherited) tagging of any kind, which means that you would have to manually tag (or assign context etc) to each individual task
I have heard that some people use the contexts for Work/Private differentiation, but as you say, since the contexts are not inherited from the project, you still have to add this "context" manually to each task.
I advise you to consider using the Context feature for a half-dozen or so "main contexts", for example as described in the my last post (25) in the thread http://help.doit.im/group/topic/23. I find the list grouping by Context extremely valuable. It is almost the only grouping I ever use for my Today list, and one of the two groupings I use most frequently in the Next list. You can also select these main Contexts in the left menu and now (new version only) see the result grouped by main list (called Box in Doit), which I am now finding more and more good uses for.
In the thread http://help.doit.im/topics/2394 I gave two suggestion for how an "areas" functionality can be implemented both for the immediate term (quite simply) and for the longer term.
Best way to Filter as a substitute for "Areas"?
First of all, I am in the process of converting everything from a competing product to Doit.im and so far I am very happy, especially with the recent updates as well as the general responsiveness of the staff here (some may be able to guess where I am coming from...). Keep it up!
A feature that is missing for me - as for many others here, as I can tell - is "areas" to separate work from personal. I understand this is being looked at but not in the immediate future. Therefore I am wondering how other are using Filters to work around this. I have tried using contexts, as these are not usually a big part of my GTD workflow otherwise. I have assigned 'private' or 'work' contexts to my standalone tasks as well as projects and set up filters accordingly. However, at least on my Mac client, this seems to work properly only for standalone tasks in my Next list. Projects are not showing up in the filtered list. Ideally, I'd love to see a list of tasks whether they are standalone and have the context assigned or the projects they are under do have the context.
What are others doing? Are there better approaches to what I am trying to achieve?
Thanks a lot!

Thank you @Folke, especially for pointing me to the other thread discussing that very topic. I should have looked in the Groups section too...I'll learn. I'll read through all these discussions and see what other options are there. I do like your use of context - it is much more thorough than what I am currently doing - I need to consider how it could improve or disrupt my current workflow.
Thanks again, I appreciate the feedback!
