I agree that Tags should be made more useful and better harmonized with Contexts, Projects and Goals, e.g.:
- inheritable Tags for Contexts. Projects and Goals to allow for quick ad hoc list filtering (using the quick list filtering feature, not necessarily the global saved search feature)
- a special "rearrangement toolbar" to allow for quick regrouping as well as simple compound filtering of the list in front of you (e.g. the Next list). Filtering should include OR, NOT and AND options and shoudl display all the Tags (including inherited Tags). http://help.doit.im/topics/2678#comment-2
It would be nice to be able to manage tags in the same ways we now manage projects and contexts by adding a section for them on the sidebar.

@Folke @rawckee
Hi,
I am sorry that it is not in our developing plan. We will do a research on it and consider it seriously.
Thank you for your feedback. -

I agree that Tags need to improved to be more usable.
I would like to use tags to separate my Work and Personal Tasks so would like to easily select Tag = Work, when at work, and all lists views to be filtered to this, i.e. only shows work tasks. All counters should also be filter to work tasks.
Currently I find it to cumbersome to add Tags as well as Context, Project, etc.
Also on the iPhone App you can filter by Tag but not on the Web App or Windows / Mac apps.

+1 I use tags extensively and am often frustrated by how clumsy the process is in the web client. Managing tags in the same manner that projects, context, etc. are managed would be fantastic.

Although I agree with what I assume is your underlying sentiment, I disagree that having tags in the left menu would be the way to go. Tags are way too powerful to be treated in the same way as e.g. Contexts. The power of Tags comes from the fact that you can apply many of them to a single task, and that you need to look at different COMBINATIONS of tags on different occasions.
If all you want is to be able to look at tasks that have one single tag, Doit already has that capability (and more; you can actually select more than just one.)
I think a more solid solution would be to be able to open a separate toolbar, e.g. in the form of a right-side menu, which contains not only all the tags but also the desired filtering conditions (NOT, OR, AND) as well as the regrouping options (Context, Deadline etc) This would give us the capability to quickly rearrange and reduce the list we have in front of us right now into something manageable that reflects what we need to see right this instant: http://help.doit.im/topics/2678#comment-2 -

Agreed but sometimes it's better to walk before you fly. At the moment I'd be happy with simply not having to manually set a tag for each individual task.

@fshapps - I totally agree that tagging of projects and goals (and even contexts, but for a slightly different purpose) should be possible and that these tags should be automatically inherited by whatever task or projects are "under" them.
(But this thread was about making Tags a section in the left menu, which is what I objected to.)
