The fact that tasks cannot be freely assigned to Contacts is a SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW.
We should not have to bastardize Contexts or Tags to assign tasks to CONTACTS.
I am currently managing 26 work projects and another dozen personal projects.
The critical piece to breakthrough performance is assigning tasks to CONTACTS to ensure ACCOUNTABILITY.
I cannot effectively co-mingle my Contexts and Tags with over 500 CONTACTS. To do so would make the system completely unmanageable on every platform.
If my life were that simple, I wouldn't need Doit.im.
I propose:
1) Allow importing of Gmail contacts. Doit.im already supports Google integration; this should be straightforward.
2) Allow assignment of tasks to a Contact without requiring the contacts to be Doit.im users.
This requirement is COUNTERPRODUCTIVE to Doit.im and it's users.
Doit.im Devs: Thank you for considering my proposal, and please feel free to reach out to flesh out this requirement if that would be helpful.

+100 for freeform addition of names. I do not want this to be tied to a particular address book or email address - just a name, or even initials.

I totally agree with the request for total freedom in who we are dealing with. We certainly cannot expect everybody else to be using Doit just because we are.
But personally, in all todo apps I have ever used, I have never actually sent off a todo "straight up" to anybody - I always make sure I phrase my emails properly and politely and understandably. Alsom I always felt more comfortable keeping down the number of contacts and the sheer size of it all in my todo app, so I tend to use very short "tags" (nicknames) for my very frequent contacts, and short "tags" for frequent generic types of contacts (such as lawyer, handyman, certain company etc). And that's it.
One important aspect is this: Whatever solution is chosen, it is an advantage if it harmonizes well with the filtering features - both the advanced saved filters and the volatile quick list filters, both of which are important features in very different ways.. -

I completely agree with this. My preference would be to use Tags for this feature. My frame of reference is this...
If I want to delegate a task to John, I use John as the Tag. So then in the Waiting for box, the task will be displayed with John. But to @Folke's point, this will allow John to be used in the filter features and appear with any other tasks that have John as a tag. That way if I create an advanced filter for John, then I see any task in any project in any context associated with John. The ones that I may want his opinion on, the ones that I may want to make him aware of, and the ones that I assigned him.
I know that other Apps allow you to create Contacts with email addresses and they have a feature where you can create an email to that Contact to send. While I like this feature in certain aspects, I didn't use it much. But those Apps still treated the Contact as a Tag, albeit a special kind of Tag which also collected email address if you wanted to enter it. -

Hi
Any news on the requested flexibility on Contacts? I too would like to have Contacts without doit needing their email addresses.
The Contacts feature is too restrictive right now and should be used so that *I* know I have delegated a task to someone, with out the application emailing them or that person having to be a doit user.
Please advise on timeline for this. It appears that there are MANY people asking for this here and in other threads.
I would prefer not to use Tags for this as I use them for other purposes. -

This request has been out for 18 months, and is the single feature that is preventing me from recommending it to more people.
