Thanks for the quick answer!
But I read old questions regarding this and the answers were that only inactive projects show up in context. Was that feature removed and if so what is the function of the Context field for pojects? -

@arnaregils
Hi,
It has been removed in the new version.
We are reconsidering this question what the function of the Context field for projects is now. -

Is there any way to group projects in this version without using goals (since its cumbersome and there is no way to sort by goal)?

I think the solution to much of this is to improve the Goals functionality at least a bit, and preferably a lot.
Contexts in the "true" (GTD) sense (i.e. places, tools or people required to be able to carry out a task) are not even applicable to projects. But some people use the Contexts feature as an "area" designator, e.g. to separate Private tasks from Work tasks etc.
Personally I use Goals for that, and I also use Goals vor very large "super-projects". I currently have five Goals.two of those are large business venture projects and three are "areas" (Private, Non-Profit and Business). I am very satisfied with this.
But I do agree that the goals are a bit cumbersome to use and there is a general lack of usability of them. For example, I think it would be natural that:
- in the long projects list, you could group by goal and/or could see the goal of each project on each line, in the same way that for tasks you can see the project and context.
- in most lists, e.g. Next, that you could group your tasks by goal (by project can be a bit cluttered)
- in the advanced saved filter and in the quick tag filter you could select or exclude certain goals
- when selecting a goal in the left menu you could see a consolidated task list (grouped by box etc) for the whole goal (not just see a list of the projects within that goal)
And, in addition, I think it would be very useful if both goals and projects could be tagged, and if these tags would be automatically inherited by all tasks (or projects) under that project (or goal). This would make it possible for us to add additional and finer classifications to our goals and projects and make use of those both in the advance saved filter and in the quick tag filter. -

What you mention would be a great way for the doit team to make categorization of projects easier. I have tried using goals like they are now but I find it to difficult to maintain and the benefits are minimal. Hope they do something about this soon.

@Folke I am following your method of using Goals as (essentially) folders to divide Projects in AORs, Work / Home / Personal etc, and so assign each Project to a Goal. This works well. What puzzles me is the use of Context in relation to a Project? Unless I'm missing something, the Context of a Project has no effect or utility. You can't sort by it in the Projects pane and Projects do not appear in the Filters. Do I just ignore the Project Context, or am I missing a trick?

@ns4
If there is a meaningful way to apply Contexts to Projects I am not aware of it. I apply Contexts only to tasks.
Sorry I couldn't help. -

@Folke thanks. I'm sure if you don't know. No one does! 😉
