Hi,
Thank you for your feedback!
It is possible now. But the person who you send task to should be Doit.im user. You can add him as your contacts, and then you can send task to him without email. When the task send to him, the task will move to your "waiting list" for that person.
Please click the link to know how to add a contact. http://faq.doit.im/web.html#63
Shall you need any help or have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me back.
Thank you for your support!
Best regards,
Doit.im Team
Is this possible?

I often have to assign tasks to people who do not use doit.im and I'm not confortable asking them to change for my benifit. Is there a way to simply assign a task to a "name" rather than having them receive an email to signup for doit.im?

Hi,
Thank you for your feedback!
Do you want to send a task to someone through other ways, such as email or msn? It has been in our developing plan.
If you want to mark a task which has assigned to some one,you could use context or tag to have a try.
Thank you for your support!

I would also like the ability to assign a task to a Doit.im non-member, or someone without an email address. I agree a current workaround is to use tags, but as Doit limits each task to 5 tags, I have found myself running out of space. I also admit I like the arrangement resulting from Group By > Contact in the Waiting list.
