it would be great to be able to create a filter for tasks with start time before today. I want a filter for tasks with high priority that started before today but I can't see any way to do that.

Yes. It would be very useful to have such a historic start date, both for filtering purposes and for simply "seeing" how long tasks have been sitting on my list.
The main problem right now is that Doit changes this start date every time you flag it on the Today list (or take it off the Today list), This behavior has many other negative consequences, too, but in order to work properly as a historic start date it would be necessary to have the same kind of starring ffeature as Gmail and the majority of other todo apps - where starring does not move or change anything, just makes the task more visible (both by starring it on the list where it actually "lives" and by also showing the task on the separate Today list.)
