You could modify the background color of widget in settings page.
Click the upper right of "..." select “Settings" from the drop-down menu to enter the Settings page,select “Widget Style” > “Background Color”,you can set the background color as “Black,White”. See the pic: http://faq.doit.im/android_4.html#174

@wendy_only Hi Wendy. I'm using the Task list widget as well on my Android phone. However, I was talking about the Box Badge widget, which looks like it's just an app with a number count (for the amount of tasks). The text that goes along with such a Box Badge widget has no background (even when background is set black and other widgets of Doit do have that background).
I included a screenshot of the Box Badge, along with the default Android camera app. You can see the camera app has shadow around (or under?) its text, the Box Badge widget hasn't. -
