A status toggle would be a very nice and simple first step, just as you say. It would allow us to conveniently mark some or many of the tasks as "later" (invisible from the main "box" lists). This would eliminate the need for ugly workarounds such as using Someday No Priority etc, which I use today.
This status toggle could then later be automated such that the first action in line would be automatically promoted to active when all preceding tasks have been completed (and users could move additional tasks from, inactive to active when appropriate).
In order to make it possible to arrange the inactive tasks in the correct sequence it would be necessary to have a manually sorted "group" for all the inactive tasks (regardless of which "box" they are destined for), such that you could place, for example, an inactive Next action "Order goods" followed by an inactive Waiting task "Delivery of goods" and then an inactive Next action "Inspect goods".
Automatic sequencing of tasks in projects
Automatic sequencing of tasks in projects (ie move inactive task from the Project list to the Next box after the completion of the previous task). Tasks would need some kind of a "status toggle" (active/inactive).
