On the web app, at least, there is a nice indicator for the task note, and I can hover and see the note without having to open the item. It would be nice if there was also an icon for comments, with the same behavior showing me the comment thread. I would like to use comments to update status or new information for a task. I can do that but I have to open the item to see the comments. So I'll probably put them in the task note instead. Not ideal, as I will have to add a timestamp each time.
